When you are delivering the Invocation & Pledge
Not all Toastmasters Clubs start with an Invocation & Pledge, but Sarasota Toastmasters Club has traditionally felt it a positive way to start a meeting. The purpose of the Invocation is not to provide a specifically religious theme - we are carefully non-denominational - but to share a brief inspirational thought or to place the meeting in a broader, spiritual context. The member filling this role also leads the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. Being able to comfortably deliver this function is great practice for situations where one may be called upon at formal or informal events. It also helps develop skills in establishing a positive (or serious) tone for a meeting, and using appropriate vocal delivery for your message.
Prior to the
meeting:
· Prepare a few words to say or read for the Invocation or inspirational moment. These may be original, or you may wish to read a short poem or other text.
· Make sure that the Stars & Stripes flag is clearly visible, so that you all know in which direction to face!
During the meeting:
· When called upon by the Sergeant at Arms or Toastmaster, you may either speak (in a standing position) from your chair, or go to the lectern.
· Invite members to stand.
· Deliver your brief (usually no more than a minute) “invocation”.
· Invite the group to face the flag, and lead the members in the Pledge of Allegiance.
· At the end, simply acknowledge the Sergeant at Arms or Toastmaster who called upon you, with a nod or a brief word, and sit down.
