When you are Timer

One of the lessons to be practiced in speech training is that of expressing a thought within a specific time interval. The timer is the member responsible for keeping track of time. Each segment of the meeting is timed. Your explanation of your duties and report to the club should be communicated clearly and precisely. This exercise is an excellent opportunity in practicing communicating instructions, something that we do every day.

Prior to the meeting:

·  Confirm scheduled program participants with the Toastmaster and general evaluator.

·  Confirm time required for each prepared speech with the speakers.

Upon arrival at the meeting:

·  Ensure you understand how to operate the stopwatch and signal device, and make certain that it is in good working order.

·  Sit where the signal device can easily be seen by all.

During the meeting:

·  Throughout the meeting, signal each program participant as indicated below. Record each participant’s name and time used.

·  The Toastmaster may call on you to announce who qualified (1) after table topics list those that spoke between 1 – 2:30, (2) after speeches list qualifiers (3) after the evaluations list those speech evaluators who qualified.

·  When called to report, stand by your chair, announce each speaker’s name and the time taken.

·  Jokemaster, Grammarian, Ah Counter and Timer reports should each be 1-2 minutes.

·  General evaluation of the meeting 2-3 min.

·  If a speaker gives a SPECIFIC Time (not a range of time) and they are with in :15 seconds, announce they are “On the Nose”.

After the meeting:

·  Return the stopwatch and timing lights to the file cabinet outside the meeting room.
